Opening the Gates to Success

The Team at India GatesWhen Bilston restauranteurs the Atwal and Kooner family, first decided to set up ‘India Gates' they realised it was only the first step on their route to success.

Raj Atwal explains:
"With great trepidation we took the plunge and purchased the ramshackle building in October 2002. Then began the long job of restoring the 1920s building to its former glory. We worked with the local Council, gaining a lottery heritage grant to help us restore the exterior to its original appearance. However, that was only the beginning. It took a lot of family investment to get the business off the ground, and we had no business experience apart from my husband's culinary training.

India Gates have found the support from BCABA and Black Country Chamber & Business Link invaluable for business advice, training and networking opportunities. The India Gates team has received support and also attended a business start-up course that provided vital information in its early days.

India Gates opened its doors for business in December 2003. It has since gone from strength to strength and its specialist Punjabi menu has even attracted Bollywood star Harbhajan Mann who has made it his restaurant of choice when visiting the UK!

The company's achievements were further recognised at the BCABA Business Awards Dinner in September when it took first place in the Business Start-Up category. The restaurant really has opened the gate to future success.
